Sebuah potret menyedihkan memperlihatkan seekor gajah betina berusia 70 tahun dengan kondisi fisik yang sangat memprihatinkan jadi viral di media sosial, khususnya Twitter.
Pasalnya, gajah tersebut nampak sangat kurus bahkan barisan tulang rusuk terlihat menonjol melalui kulitnya yang keriput.

Sebuah akun Twitter bernama @bolooobolooo, mengunggah foto gajah kurus tersebut.
Dengan menyertakan keterangan emoji menangis dan patah hati, unggahan ini mendapat respon beragam dari warganet.
Beberapa warganet mengaku baru pertama kali melihat gajah dengan kondisi fisik yang kurus lantaran gajah identik dengan tubuh yang besar.
“seumur hidup baru pernah liat gajah kurus,” tulis @undereun.
“Seumur hidup baru lihat gajah kurus” ujar @13candless.
Dipaksa Ikut Parade Sore Hingga Malam Selama 10 Hari
Dikutip dari Daily Mirror, foto ini berawal dari yayasan penyelamatan gajah, Save Elephant Foundation yang diunggah untuk memperingati Hari Gajah Dunia yang jatuh pada Senin kemarin (12/8/2019).
Diketahui dari Save Elephant Foundation, gajah tersebut bernama Tikiiri, yang bakal bekerja bersama 60 ekor gajah lainnya dalam Festival Perahera di Sri Lanka.
Gajah Tikiiri mengikuti parade tersebut setiap sore hingga malam hari selama 10 hari berturut-turut.
Pendiri Yayasan Save Elephant Foundation, Lek Chailert menyebutkan, gajah-gajah ini diminta berjalan berkilo-kilo meter dengan kaki terikat rantai.
Tak hanya rantai yang mengikat kakinya, tubuh Tikiiri juga ditutupi kustom warna-warni untuk menutupi keprihatinan fisiknya.
“Tidak ada yang melihat air matanya, dia terluka oleh cahaya terang yang menghiasi topengnya, dan kesulitan melangkah ketika kakinya dibelenggu,” ujar Save Elephant.

Dikutip dari Kompas.com lebih lanjut, Tikiiri bekerja untuk kuil Tooth di Kota Kandy dan menyerukan publik untuk meminta kepada Perdana Menteri Sri Lanka untuk mencegah ‘kekejaman’ ini.
World Animal Protection menyebut ada 3.000 ekor gajah yang dipakai untuk kepentingan hiburan seantero Asia, dengan 77 persen di antaranya diperlakukan kejam.
Juru bicara Kuil Tooth kepada Metro kemudian menanggapi dengan mengatakan mereka selalu “memperhatikan dan menyayangi” binatang selama berlangsungnya festival.
Muncul Petisi “Save Tikiiri from barbaric abuse”
Setelah ramai diperbincangkan, seorang warganet bernama Joannna Davidson memulai sebuah petisi dukungan untuk menyelamatkan Tikiiri dari eksploitasi ini.
Ditujukan untuk Ranil Wickremesinghe, petisi ini berisi ajakan untuk menghentikan penyiksaan terhadap Tikiiri.
“Untuk sebuah upacara, semua memiliki hak untuk berkeyakinan selama kepercayaan itu tidak mengganggu atau merugikan orang lain. Bagaimana kita dapat menyebut ini sebagai berkat, atau sesuatu yang suci, jika kita membuat hidup orang lain menderita?” tulis Joanna dalam ajakan petisi online tersebut.
