Mata Herayati berbinar-binar saat menceritakan kisah dirinya diminta jadi dosen di Kampus Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (Untirta) Banten. Jadi dosen adalah cita-citanya sejak kecil.
Hera, begitu panggilannya, pernah menjadi pemberitaan pada 2018 lalu saat dirinya lulus dengan predikat cum laude dari Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Saat itu, media mengangkat kisah Hera, seorang anak pengayuh becak yang berprestasi.

Saat ditanya apa cita-citanya, Hera mengutarakan ingin menjadi dosen. Inilah awal mula perjalanan Hera menggapai impiannya mengajar di kampus ternama di Banten tersebut.
“2018 lalu saya diminta datang ke Untirta, tapi saat itu saya baru lulus S1, sementara jadi dosen minimal S2,” kata Hera kepada Kompas.com di kediamannya di Jalan Masigit-Sumur Menjangan, Grogol, Kota Cilegon, Banten, Rabu (24/7/2019).
Hera yang kebetulan mengambil program fast track di ITB melanjutkan S2 di sana, yang ditempuhnya dalam waktu kurang dari satu tahun. Hebatnya lagi, dia lulus dengan predikat cum laude dengan IPK 3,8.
Setelah lulus S2, pihak Kampus Untirta kembali memanggil Hera, dan langsung diberi amanah untuk mengabdi sebagai dosen luar biasa di Jurusan Teknik.
“Maunya jadi dosen tetap, tapi harus PNS, sambil menunggu penerimaan, jadi dosen luar biasa dulu sementara di teknik untuk kimia dasar, mulai ngajar bulan September ini,” kata perempuan kelahiran 17 April 1997 ini.
Apa yang dicapai oleh Hera saat ini bukan sesuatu yang bisa didapat dengan mudah. Dia menceritakan perih dan terjalnya perjalanan saat menempuh kuliah dalam keadaan terbatas.
Ya, ayah Hera, Sawiri, hanyalah seorang pengayuh becak di Cilegon. Sementara ibunya tinggal di rumah mengurus rumah tangga. Dengan penghasilan yang tidak menentu, sulit dipercaya bahwa Hera bisa menyabet gelar sarjana dan magister di ITB.
Awal Mula Masuk ITB
Hera mengatakan, impian untuk masuk ke ITB sudah muncul sejak dirinya SMP. Selepas lulus SMA, Hera pernah gagal masuk ITB di seleksi pertama lewat jalur undangan.
Tidak patah semangat, dia mengikuti seleksi berikutnya lewat tes tertulis dan lolos di Teknik Kimia.
Walaupun berasal dari keluarga dengan ekonomi terbatas, Hera tidak pernah ragu untuk tetap melanjutkan kuliahnya. Dia tetap melaju dengan optimistis.
Pada awal tahun kuliahnya, Hera mendapat sejumlah beasiswa, di antaranya dari program bidik misi dan bantuan dari Pemerintah Kota Cilegon.
Namun, beasiswa tersebut terkadang masih kurang untuk menutupi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Sementara mengandalkan kiriman dari orangtuanya juga mustahil.
“Akhirnya saya cari tambahan, mulai dari jadi asisten dosen, hingga ngajar bimbel,” kata dia.
Hera akhirnya berhasil lulus S1 pada Juli 2018 lalu dan menjadi salah satu lulusan ITB terbaik dengan predikat cum laude.

Satu bulan setelah lulus, Hera lantas mengambil magister untuk memenuhi syarat menjadi dosen di Untirta. Dari target lulus satu tahun karena program fast track, Hera mampu menyelesaikannya dalam waktu 10 bulan saja, itu pun setengah masa kuliahnya dihabiskan di Chulalongkorn University Thailand lewat program Student Exchange.
Hera mengatakan kerja kerasnya selama ini tidak lepas dari dukungan kedua orangtuanya. Kendati mereka tidak mampu membiayai kuliah, tapi, kata dia, dukungan dan doanya tidak pernah berhenti.
“Walaupun tidak punya, Bapak dan Mamah tidak pernah melarang, walaupun diam, tapi tidak pernah bilang jangan, selalu mendukung, walaupun tidak lewat materi, tapi doanya luar biasa,” kata dia.
